The principal plays a pivotal role in developing a safe, supportive and disciplined school environment. A school is more likely to be successful in improving behaviour and learning outcomes when the principal demonstrates visible and active support of a positive whole-school approach to behaviour.
Effective principals establish and actively participate in a school leadership team to enact the Responsible behaviour plan for students and manage the implementation of a whole-school approach to behaviour. They engage all members of the school community and participate in the development, implementation and enhancement of the plan.
Regularly reviewing the Responsible behaviour plan for students, using data to inform discussions and decision-making, enables the school to continuously improve student behaviour and learning.
When school leaders act as instructional leaders facilitating professional learning opportunities for all staff to enhance their skills to positively manage behaviour, staff are more likely to put what they learn into action.
