Suspension (1–10 and 11–20 school days)

Suspension is a serious disciplinary consequence that prohibits an enrolled student from attending school and any school-related activities, for a set period of time. A suspension of 1 to 10 school days is known as a ‘short suspension. A suspension of 11 to 20 school days is known as a 'long suspension'. A school's Student Code of Conduct will explain the school’s expectations about behaviour and outline the possible range of consequences, such as suspension, that may be used to respond to inappropriate behaviour.

Each of the following is a ground for suspension under the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006:

  • disobedience
  • misbehaviour
  • conduct that adversely affects, or is likely to adversely affect, other students
  • conduct that adversely affects, or is likely to adversely affect, the good order and management of the school
  • the student’s attendance at the school poses an unacceptable risk to the safety or wellbeing of other students or of staff
  • the student is charged with a serious offence—refer to suspension (charge-related)
  • the student is charged with an offence other than a serious offence; and the principal is reasonably satisfied it would not be in the best interests of other students or of staff for the student to attend the school while the charge is pending—refer to suspension (charge-related).

For more information regarding suspension in Queensland state schools, refer to the fact sheet—suspension (1-10 days and 11-20 days) (PDF, 676KB) and the student discipline—suspension 1–10 days and 11–20 days video.

A charge-related suspension may be imposed if the principal is reasonably satisfied that an enrolled student has been charged with either:

  • a serious offence (as defined in the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000)
  • an offence (other than a serious offence); and the principal is reasonably satisfied it would not be in the best interests of other students or staff for the student to attend the school while the charge is pending.
